In September 2019, Martin County approved the installation of a second floating treatment wetland system, at the Golden Gate STA, to capture nutrient runoff prior to discharge into Manatee Pocket and the lower St. Lucie River. We deployed six Beemats, covering 2,614 square feet in the 1.2 acre saline pond in early October and initiated a six month harvest and sampling cycle. Over the past two years, the plants on the Golden Gate floating islands have removed 308.45 pounds of nitrogen and 39.99 pounds of phosphorus from the water in the pond and prevented its entry into the downstream estuaries.
